Birders Catch Rare ‘Eurasian Hobby’ at Okhla Bird Sanctuary

NOIDA: There’s a nip in the air and to celebrate the onset of autumn, members of Delhi Bird Photographers Group, visited the Okhla bird sanctuary early Sunday morning to spot and shoot resident and visiting birds in the sanctuary.

The group reports to have sighted a prize catch, the Eurasian Hobby, a small slim falcon which lives in Europe and Central, eastern Asia. It spends its winters in South Asia. Delhi Bird Photographers is a 5000 member strong bird photography group located out of Delhi-NCR.

“15 members came together this morning in the photography trip. There were people from Gurgaon, Delhi and Noida. We host the photo shoots every Sunday at various places and at least once a month in Okhla. We will shoot here again in November. We usually announce our shoot dates on social media,” Mathew Joseph, founder of the Delhi Photographer Group told.

The group assembled at Okhla at 6:30am and ended by 11:30 am. Apart from the Eurasian Hobby, they reported to have shot a range of ducks and waders residing in the sanctuary presently.

Founded three years ago, the Delhi Bird Group members meet every Sunday at various marshes and wetlands of Delhi-NCR.

Some of the spots they frequent include, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary,Gurgaon, Basai wetlands and the Aravalis, in Gurgaon, Okhla Bird Sanctuary, Surajpur Wetland, Dhanauri wetlands, Greater Noida among other spots like Jhajjar in Haryana. The group reaches birding locations with binoculars, camera, guidebooks and logbooks to record sightings.

The group has reported the sighting of birds like Indian Peafowl, Green Bee-eater , Spot-billed Duck,Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Purple Heron, Shikra ,Marsh Harrier ,White-breasted Waterhen , Red-naped Ibis ,Pond Heron ,Wood Sandpiper ,Whiskered Tern ,River tern,,Grey Heron ,Indian Cormorant, Greater Coucal ,Moorhen ,Black-winged Stilt , Koel, Cattle Egret , Little Egret ,Oriental Honey Buzzard,Great Egret,Darter,Grey Hornbill ,Rose-ringed Parakeet,White-throated Kingfisher ,Coppersmith Barbet ,Black-headed Ibis , Red-wattled Lapwing ,Collared-Dove , Eurasian Hobby ,Black Kite,,Great Cormorant ,,Grey-headed Swamphen , Rock Pigeon, Laughing Dove ,Brown headed Barbet,Purple Sunbird, Black Drongo , House Crow ,Oriental Magpie-Robin ,Bluethroat ,Stonechat, Asian Pied Starling ,Red Avadavat, Plain Prinia ,Blyth’s Reed-Warbler ,Yellow-bellied Prinia, Red-whiskered Bulbul ,Striated Babbler ,Oriental White-eye, Ashy Prinia , Common Chiffchaff , Jungle Babbler , Lesser Whistling-Duck ,Common Myna , Bushchat , Ruddy Shelduck , Canary Flycatcher, Rufus Treepie , Oriental Magpie robin.

“Over the last three years that we have been shooting at Okhla, we have been spotting lesser and lesser numbers. In order of variety and numbers, now the best birding location is Sultanpur, followed by Dhanauri, Surajpur, Okhla Bird Sanctuary and Basai. Jhahhar in Haryana is now becoming increasingly popular among birders to explore, spot and shoot domestic, exotic and migratory species,” Joseph added.
