Drunk driver nabbed after 15-min chase

NEW DELHI: A drunk driver was arrested after PCR vans chased his sedan through parts of south Delhi on Tuesday night.  A PCR team posted near Safdurjung Hospital spotted the speeding Hyundai Accent coming from Dhaula Kuan around 3am. Signalled to stop, the driver fled, hitting a cop near AIIMS. With the city under high-security cover before the Independence Day , the team immediately flashed a message. At least 10 PCR vans and nearly as many local thana vehicles mounted a 15-minute chase.

When a PCR van managed to overtake it, the sedan rammed it and turned towards Aurobindo Marg. Later he tried to flee towards Kotla Mubarak Pur. The car was finally stopped at a newly created blockade near the South Ex market and Sumit Kumar (23) was pulled out after a scuffle. He said he was returning from a friend’s house in Dwarka and panicked seeing the police.

His father, Mukesh Kumar, owner of a meat shop in KM Pur, alleged that his son was thrashed by drunk cops. But additonal DCP (south) Nupur Prasad claimed, “The policemen were found to be sober in a medical checkup.”
