“She had called me to narrate her story how she was subjected to sexual abuse and blackmailing by Neeraj and others. She asked me to marry someone else since it could affect my social life. However, my family and I did not change our decision,” Jitender Chhatar told the Times of India.
When Jitender’s family approached the girl’s with a marriage proposal and they accepted it, she got apprehensive regarding his future, more than hers. However, this young farmer from Chhatar village of Jind district in Haryana was not the one to be daunted by societal thinking or pressure.
The owner of a coaching institute, Neeraj and four others had raped the girl and threatened her thereafter. The offenders include a woman whom the police caught while she was taking an extortion money installment. This and the arrest of the remaining accused was realized through Jitender’s and the Police’s joint efforts. He is supposed to meet Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar today (Wednesday) to seek his support in booking one of the accused who is still absconding.
Neeraj had also approached Jitender for a settlement worth Rs 70 Lakhs and threatened him to break his marriage with the girl. On facing negation at the hands of Jitender, he wrongly implicated Jitender in two cases in Uttar Pradesh and Jind with the help of a DSP.
Jitender married the gang-rape survivor in December last year and joined her in her struggle to attain justice. Also, he enrolled her in a law course as he told TOI, “She can join the judicial services or as a lawyer can help other rape survivors. We have already started a platform called, Youth Against Rapes.”
All we hope is for others to learn to stop criminalizing the victim. He has set out to do something great amidst the world with rapidly degenerating humanity and we all MUST learn from him.
